Oct 13 - OR - Oregon Reach 50% Diversion Rate
Oregon Department of Environmental Quality just released their 2010 Oregon Material Recovery and Waste Generation Rates Report, showing the state has hit 50% diversion rate. This is up from up from 48.3% in 2009.
Oregon was able to meet their 2009 goal of 50% diversion rate in 2010, where diversion includes recycling, composting and burning for energy
Besides saving landfill space, the DEQ report estimated “The energy savings and greenhouse gas reductions from materials recovered in 2010 are significant and compares to nearly 216 million gallons of gasoline or nearly three percent of Oregon’s total 2010 energy use.”
