The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity just released a study affirming that the recycling industry is a significant driver of economic activity in the state.

According to the study, 40,000 people in Illinois are directly employed through the industry, while another 71,500 people have jobs indirectly from recycling, amounting to a total payroll of $3.6 billion. Drawing from trade association data, the Census Bureau, surveys and other government and private sources, the study concluded that $30.3 billion in gross receipts can be attributed to recycling in the state, generating $1 billion to state and local taxes.
