Yesterday evening, the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority voted to adopt a sweeping single-use bag ordinance throughout its seven incorporated cities, as well as unincorporated county areas.

With this move, the total number of local jurisdictions that approved bag ordinances in the Golden State now number an unparalleled 25—more than triple the seven local ordinances adopted by the end of 2010. See the full list of local bag ordinances here.

Starting this fall, large stores and supermarkets in San Luis Obispo County, as well as the Cities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, and San Luis Obispo, are prohibited from distributing single-use plastic carryout bags. Single-use, recycled content paper bags are allowed with a 10 cent minimum price requirement starting in December 2012. Congratulations to the San Luis Obispo community for taking a stand against the plastic bag industry! 80 public speakers testified during the four hour hearing yesterday according to media reports, and despite recent industry scare tactics to garner opposition, more than two-thirds were in support.
